The Transformative Power of Meditation and Incense | A Personal Journey

Mrs. Allen has always been an enigma to me - a strong, independent woman who never seemed to need anyone else. I could tell she had her own secrets and struggles that she kept locked away in her heart, but it wasn't until I became an adult that I understood what they were.

I have known my friend's aunt, Mrs. Allen, since I was a little girl. She was always so warm and caring towards me, like an adoptive grandmother of sorts. When her husband passed away suddenly two years ago, it came as a shock to all of us. In the months following his death, Mrs. Allen found herself struggling to cope with her grief and loneliness while raising two teenage grandchildren on her own.

Everyday seemed like an uphill battle. She wanted nothing more than to provide stability and an outlet for her grandkids during a difficult time, but also didn't want them feeling burdened by the gravity of their situation at home. So instead of them being cooped up inside dwelling in their sorrows, she encouraged them to pursue extracurricular activities that would help take their minds off things and keep them busy when they weren't at school or home with her.

The strategy worked well for the children and they soon flourished again. However, Mrs. Allen wasn't prepared for how much lonelier she felt without having her soulmate and husband of 62 years by her side. Her aging health and strained finances did not allow her the same luxuries that she managed to sacrifice for her  grandchildren. After trying various types of therapy and medication that came with horrible side effects, she began exploring alternative methods for healing – anything that might offer some relief from the pain she felt inside.

She stumbled upon an ancient practice - meditation combined with the use of incense as a powerful tool for managing depression and anxiety. At first, it sounded strange and intimidating; yet, there was something comforting about this idea that appealed to her - like a gentle hug from an old love.

Incense has been used for centuries in spiritual practices worldwide, often in combination with meditation. The aromatic smoke produced by burning incense is believed to create a calming atmosphere, promoting relaxation and focus during meditation. In fact, according to a study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, certain incense ingredients, such as frankincense, have been found to possess antidepressant properties. Research has also shown that meditation can have profound effects on mental health, including reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety. Similarly, a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that mindfulness meditation can help ease psychological stresses like anxiety, depression, and pain.

Armed with this knowledge, each morning Mrs. Allen would light incense in her living room before sitting in her husband's old favorite chair to meditate and reflect.

Little by little, she felt herself slowly begin to heal as she meditated each day. It became something like therapy for her—a form of self-care that allowed her mind and body some respite from all the sadness around her life right now.

Gradually, but surely over time, my friend’s aunt began finding comfort in these moments alone where she could finally focus on just herself without worrying about anyone else’s feelings or needs first – allowing herself space both physically and mentally from all the darkness around us. As days went by, peace settled within - not only did it help clear up any negative emotions, but also filled her with new optimism, energy, courage & strength.
